Breaking Down Homeowners Coverage

When you get your quote from Plymouth Rock, you’ll find many coverage options, with a range of limits and deductibles. That’s because home insurance is made up of many different coverages that work together to form your overall protection. Certain parts of your policy cover your home, while other parts cover the things you keep inside, and yet another part handles your liability protection. Here’s a primer on what all that means.

Your home. The actual, physical structure of your home is often what people first think of when it comes to home insurance. In the insurance industry (and on your policy), this is referred to as “Coverage A.” It’s the coverage used to repair or replace your home in the event of a covered loss.

Sheds, detached garages, workshops and fencing. Falling trees, fires or other events can cause damage to the structures around your home. While these may not cost as much to replace as the house itself, the expenses can be significant if these items are damaged or destroyed. This would include things like fences, decks, sheds and the “other structures” on your property. This is known as “Coverage B.”

Your possessions. It can cost much more than you might think if you needed to replace everything inside your house. The bill to replace your stainless steel kitchen appliances, jewelry, your flat screen television and the couch you sit on to watch it can add up fast. This is known as “Coverage C.” You may also hear about “replacement cost v. actual cash value.” Plymouth Rock’s Pennsylvania home policies come with replacement cost by default, but you’re welcome to change that.

Additional living expenses. If you are unable to live in your home because of damage or a complete loss, your homeowners policy can provide funds for temporary lodging, meals and other related expenses. It’s what you’ll see referred to as “Coverage D.”

Liability. This coverage can help protect you if you or a member of your household is held legally responsible for causing damage (bodily or property) to others. This is also known as “Coverage E.” So if your child is having a backyard homerun derby and accidentally breaks a neighbor’s sliding glass door, we cover that.

Medical payments. This part of your home insurance helps to protect you if others are injured on your property. You’ll sometimes hear it referred to as “Coverage F.” How does it work? For example, if a guest in your home falls and requires treatment, this coverage takes care of the medical bills regardless of whether or not you were responsible for your guest’s injuries.

Additional Coverages

Plymouth Rock’s Pennsylvania home insurance offers additional optional coverages that go above and beyond the standard coverage you typically see from other companies:

•    Guaranteed replacement cost. We’ll pay for the full cost of a covered loss with no deduction for depreciation.
•    Utility service line coverage to protect connections between your house and the street that may not be covered by your town, the cable company, or your electricity provider.
•    Home systems coverage to protect essentials like furnaces, air conditioners, or home entertainment systems when they malfunction.
•    Identity theft monitoring and a personal assistant to help resolve an identity theft incident.
•    Home-share endorsement. Do you rent your home (or a room)? Make sure you’re covered.
