Auto Insurance Coverage in NY

Coverage selections for New York drivers will vary widely depending on your individual needs, but all drivers in NY will need to meet required minimum coverage requirements. Take a moment to learn more about your choices for auto insurance coverage in NY and what is required by law. Most licensed agents will recommend that you purchase more than the minimum amounts to adequately protect yourself in the event of a motor vehicle accident, but it’s good to understand where the baseline is.

How to Understand New York Auto Insurance Coverage

Your current auto insurance policy may contain these three commonly purchased kinds of protection for you and your car, in addition to Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Uninsured Motorist (UM):
• Liability: Minimum liability coverage in NY must include the following:
• $10,000 for property damage for a single accident
• $25,000 for bodily injury and $50,000 for death for a person involved in an accident
• $50,000 for bodily injury and $100,000 for death for two or more people in an accident
Liability insurance helps pay to repair or replace the vehicle of other parties in an accident when you are at fault and also pays for bodily injury to others in those instances.
• Collision coverage: Collision insurance is not required in NY, but if your car gets damaged in an accident (without another liable party), collision insurance will help you get your own vehicle repaired or replaced. If you still owe money on a loan, your lender will require this kind of coverage to protect their investment. Even if you don't owe any money for your car, you might choose to keep collision coverage to protect yourself.
• Comprehensive: This kind of coverage helps reimburse you for many kinds of damage that could occur for reasons other than a collision with another vehicle. Some examples include vandalism, theft and hail. Like collision coverage, comprehensive is optional (provided that you don't have a lender that requires it). Still, if your car gets damaged in a storm or because of mischief, you’ll be happy to have this coverage. Comprehensive coverage may be purchased even if collision coverage is not. If you purchase collision for your vehicle, however, comprehensive must also be added for that vehicle.

New York also requires uninsured coverage and Personal Injury Protection coverage.

Additional Auto Insurance Choices for New Yorkers

In addition to the basic types of insurance required by either the state or an auto lender, you may also have additional choices you can make to upgrade your protection. For example, you may (and should) choose to purchase more liability insurance than the state requires so that you adequately protect your financial security. For extra liability coverage, you could also choose to purchase umbrella coverage. Umbrella insurance offers you an affordable way to increase overall protection for high-net worth individuals and families.
