Car Insurance Companies in New York | Plymouth Rock

You rely on your vehicle and, most likely, use it daily to get where you need to go. That's why it is important to maintain proper car insurance on your vehicle. The New York State Department of Financial Services lists over 50 car insurance companies that offer auto coverage in the Empire State. Consumers have a wide range of choices in NY. Choice is a great thing when you are shopping for coverage in a state that annually ranks at or near the top for most expensive auto insurance premiums. But having that many choices can also make it challenging to decide where to purchase your insurance.

Car Insurance Requirements in New York

First, you will want to make sure that you know what coverages to select. Like many states, New York requires that drivers maintain liability insurance. This type of car insurance protects other people from damage you cause when you or someone you allow to drive your vehicle causes damage to others. For example, if you cause an accident this policy covers the property damage and bodily injury you cause to another person. In New York, you must carry at least $25,000 for bodily injury, or $50,000 for injury resulting in death, sustained by any one person in an accident. If you cause an accident injuring more than one person, the minimum limits are $50,000 for bodily injury and $100,000 for injury resulting in death.

You must also maintain at least $10,000 in property damage coverage, which pays for the damage you cause to the other vehicle or property. Remember, though, this is the very minimum. A typical New York auto insurance company will recommend that you have at least $100,000 in liability coverage to be adequately covered in the case of an accident.
Another required coverage in New York is Personal Injury Protection (PIP), which pays for medical expenses, lost earnings and other expenses related to injuries sustained by you or your passengers in an accident in your car, up to $50,000 per person. This coverage applies regardless of who is at fault for the accident.

Uninsured motorist coverage is also a required coverage in New York. This coverage applies when you and/or your passengers are injured due to the negligence of a driver of another vehicle who has no insurance, or is unknown (hit and run). The coverage limit must match the limit selected for bodily injury liability coverage. Uninsured motorist coverage applies only to accidents occurring in the state of NY, but can be extended for out-of-state accidents for an additional charge.

Also note that if you have a loan on your vehicle, your lender may require that you maintain physical damage coverage on your auto, which consists of comprehensive coverage and collision coverage.

Protecting Your Asset Goes Further

Aside from liability insurance, licensed agents will typically recommend that most drivers protect the value of their vehicle. For example, comprehensive auto insurance covers damage to your vehicle from events such as fires, theft and vandalism. Your agent may also recommend collision insurance. This coverage provides you with financial protection for instances in which you collide with someone or something and cause damage to your car.
