How To Get Your Motorcycle License in NJ - Plymouth Rock

If you’re a Garden State resident and plan to operate a motorcycle, you’ll need a New Jersey motorcycle license or endorsement. Properly licensing yourself is the responsible thing to do and will ensure that you comply with state laws. Following state laws and guidelines helps to keep yourself and others safe on the road.

What is a Motorcycle License?

New Jersey requires those who wish to operate a motorcycle to be endorsed or licensed, which can be done in one of two ways:

1.    If you already have a driver’s license you can add a motorcycle endorsement.
2.    If you don’t already have a license to drive cars, you can obtain a separate motorcycle license.

Those who drive three-wheeled vehicles will also need a motorcycle license, but keep in mind that this license will be restricted to three-wheelers. Drivers of small scooters or mopeds that can’t go more than 35 mph are not required to obtain a motorcycle license, if you already have a basic driver’s license.

What’s the General Process for Getting a  License?

You must be at least 17 years old to get an endorsement or motorcycle license. For an endorsement, you may complete a basic motorcycle riding course or follow the necessary steps to be tested by the state.

If you’re getting a motorcycle license without already having a driver’s license, the steps are similar but it will take significantly longer, as you must complete a one-year probationary period. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has all the information you need about specific steps to take in each situation.
