Understanding Personal Car Insurance Coverage in New Jersey

Car insurance is mandatory in New Jersey, but there are many different options to choose from. Drivers have the option to select their level of coverage, choosing how much they want to protect their personal assets from liability. Adjusting coverage types, amounts, deductibles, and discounts allows drivers to create policies that meet their needs.

Basic Policy Versus Standard Policy

New Jersey law created a basic policy that is available to drivers in the state at a lower cost than the typical standard policy. The basic policy provides $15,000 personal injury protection coverage and $5,000 property damage liability coverage. Drivers also have the option of purchasing $10,000 of bodily injury liability coverage. However, this is very limited and may not be appropriate for all individuals.

The standard policy starts at $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident of bodily injury liability coverage and $5,000 of property damage coverage, but it provides the option of more coverage for buyers to fully protect their assets. The standard policy also includes the $15,000 of personal injury protection coverage required by New Jersey, but gives the option of increasing this amount as well to provide peace of mind.

Optional Comprehensive and Collision Auto Insurance Coverage

In addition to liability insurance, drivers can purchase standard auto insurance that covers repairs to their own vehicle, which is essential for expensive vehicles. Comprehensive coverage is for damage caused by theft, vandalism, and most types of natural disasters. Collision coverage is for damage caused by collisions with stationary or moving objects. Both of these types of coverage include a deductible the policyholder must pay before the insurance pays for the remainder of the repairs to the vehicle.
