Spare Tire Maintenance

When a flat tire has you stuck on the side of the road, you don’t want to stay there for long. You’re either calling for roadside assistance, or rolling up your sleeves to swap out that flat with a spare.

If it has been a while since you’ve thought about your spare tire, you’ll want to make sure it’s prepared to get your car moving. Take some time for a little proactive spare tire maintenance. Spending a few minutes now will help to keep your spare in tip-top shape (ideally, round and full of air).

Check Your Equipment

Does your car even come with a spare? Some newer models don’t and may just include a tire inflation kit. Poke around your car to see what kind of spare tire and tools you have, if any at all. Quick aside: always put your personal safety first and call for help if you have any doubts about your ability to change a tire yourself.

Full-Sized Spare or Donut?

If your car is carrying a spare – which kind is it? There’s a sizable difference. While it’s a bit less common, a full-sized spare is one that’s the same size as the rest of your tires. You should note whether your tire matches your regular set or is a “non-matching” spare.

If your car has a temporary spare, also known as a donut, there will be a noticeable performance difference when driving. Plus, the size difference between the donut and the rest of your tires limits the speed and distance you can safely drive.

Ongoing Care

Regardless of spare size, you’ll want to make sure it’s properly inflated and in good condition, just in case you need to use it. Check in on your spare during regular intervals (like when you rotate your tires) to check for air pressure, corrosion around the rim and any other visible damage.

Non-matching full size spares and donuts are temporary fixes and should only be used long enough to safely get to a service center. Once at a service center, a trained professional should replace the spare with a tire that matches your set.

Heading on a road trip? Remember to add spare tire maintenance to your list of things to do before hitting the road.
