Who Needs Car Insurance in Pennsylvania?

There are many reasons you may need car insurance: protecting yourself, your passengers, your vehicle and your finances. But you may have other questions. What if you don’t own a car or drive on a regular basis? What if you haven’t obtained your driver’s license yet? You may still need (and be required to have) the protection that car insurance provides or you may be required to be listed on someone else’s policy.  The bottom line is that if you ever drive a vehicle for any reason, car insurance is required.

What Auto Insurance Do You Need in Pennsylvania?

There are many coverages available to you, but at the heart of any policy should be the ability to meet the bare minimum levels of required auto insurance.

  •  The state requires individuals to maintain at least $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident in bodily injury liability coverage.
  • You must also carry at least $5,000 worth of property damage liability coverage.
  • Finally, the state also requires drivers to maintain $5,000 worth of medical benefits. This coverage pays the medical bills for you and others who are covered by your policy, regardless of fault, if there are injuries resulting from an accident. The minimum limit is $5,000.

You might find that it’s a smart decision to purchase higher limits as well as other coverages that may not be legally required, such as uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, collision and comprehensive to name a few. Find out more about coverage and policy options.

What Affects Car Insurance Rates in Pennsylvania

It is important to know what affects car insurance rates and to shop around on a regular basis so that you can find the best price. Factors such as driving record, location where you park, credit score, driver age and vehicle make and model can affect your price and premiums. You also may be able to receive a lower insurance rate if your vehicle is equipped with anti-theft devices, or if you have a vehicle that is statistically at a low risk of theft.

Why Did My Car Insurance Go Up?

You just found out your rates went up again, and you think to yourself, “Why did my car insurance go up?” There are literally hundreds of factors that figure into an individual’s or a household’s auto insurance premium calculation. Some of the most common reasons for an increase in your car insurance premium are across-the-board-rate increases, which are out of your control. Other reasons such as moving violations, coverage changes, address change, other drivers on your policy, coverage lapse, a change in credit score, recent insurance claims, and short-term discounts may have a limited time period and may be something you can control. If you’re still scratching your head about why your car insurance rate just increased, it may be time to consult with a licensed insurance professional.
