The latest in a series of improvements in safety regulations for school buses went live earlier this week. Now, anyone with internet access can view the latest inspection result of their child’s school bus. This information is now easily accessible to the public via a new state website. The initiative is designed to allow concerned drivers, parents, and residents access to in-depth information about the vehicles that transport the state’s children on a daily basis.
The information is made available by a multi-field search that can be completed by simply entering in a local zip code, county, or bus company name. Each search will return a list of options that can then be drilled down to individual vehicles, their most recent inspection results and any required repairs, and the time frame in which those repairs must be made.
“The MVC is serious when it comes to the safety of school buses, so we are very proud of the enhancements we have made to our School Bus Report Card,” New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission Chairman and Chief Administrator Raymond P. Martinez said in the announcement. “We want parents to feel comfortable that the vehicle used to transport their child each school day is safe and ready to go,” said Martinez.
There are over 24,000 school vehicles operating in the state. During New Jersey’s bi-annual inspections, nearly 48% may be placed on temporary suspension until fixes and repairs can be made within the allotted 30 day limit imposed by the state.
Most vehicles on New Jersey roads are subject to measures to help keep all drivers safe such as routine inspection, registration and state laws requiring auto insurance. For Mr. Martinez it was imperative that “as with the inspection of any school vehicle that transports children, MVC inspectors are meticulous in their efforts to detect major and minor defects. It is this dedication to school bus safety that demonstrates to the citizens of New Jersey that we are providing a true benefit.”
