Think back to when you were a permit driver. Your parent or teacher was probably in the passenger seat, gripping the dash and slamming on their invisible brake. What you may not remember are the directions they were shouting at you. Those instructions were important then, and are still important today. Here are some of the forgotten tips and tricks for safe driving.
Many experienced drivers have forgotten the basic safety precautions and keys to successful driving, despite having them drilled into their brains when they had their permits.
Be honest. Do you always come to a complete stop at stop signs? How many times have you sped up to make it through a yellow light? As a permit driver you probably didn’t dare to take those risks. Why should today be any different?
If you’re not using good safety habits on a regular basis you may have lost your ability to do so or are simply out of practice. While you may have learned to park properly on a hill and passed your road test with the skills to parallel park, it’s a good idea to revisit some basic safe driving techniques:
- Don’t go above the speed limit
- Use your turn signals
- Check your mirrors
- Stop completely at stop signs

The next time you get behind the wheel, take a moment to remember your parent’s or driving instructor’s advice instead of recalling the look on their face.
