Looking for free and family-oriented NJ Memorial Day activities? Check out the Tour of Somerville Cycling Series — a New Jersey tradition since 1940 and the nation’s oldest major bicycle race.

Watch hours of uber-fit professional and amateur cyclists whiz down Main Street in Somerville, NJ, at speeds up to 40 mph as they jockey for position to win their age group races.

There is no admission cost and plenty of room on the town’s sidewalks and courthouse green space to view the races. While the first event starts at 10:45 am, races go well into the afternoon and the town has separate events scheduled in the morning, beginning at 9 am.

While the event is about bicycle racing, it also honors Memorial Day in a unique way: the first winners of the race were both killed while serving in World War II.

Here’s how the Tour of Somerville organizers put it:

“It is not only a bike race, but a festival, a carnival, and a giant family reunion rolled into one, honoring American heroes on Memorial Day.”

If bike racing isn’t your thing, Plymouth Rock in NJ has been to plenty of other places that make for great NJ Memorial Day activities, like the Adventure Aquarium, Liberty State Park, and Grounds for Sculpture. What are your Memorial Day plans?
