Taconic High School senior Lucas Benjamin is our newest High School Hero.

Our High School Heroes program honors seven high school students who show consistent and exemplary work in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the community.

Lucas, who is captain of his high school swim team, helped lead his fellow swimmers to become co-champions of the Berkshire County Swimming League two seasons in a row.

Outside of the pool, Lucas is a well-rounded student who hopes “to pursue a career combining my love of mathematics and statistics with my passion for politics and international affairs.”

Lucas is also an avid Classical scholar. Along with mathematics, Latin is one of his favorite subjects. He’s an active member of the Massachusetts Junior Classical League, which promotes Latin and Greek Classical studies in the school and community.

When Lucas isn’t in school, he enjoys being a summer mentor at the Pittsfield Police Department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Camp.

The young athlete-scholar will be awarded a $1,000 prize, and will be recognized at the MIAA state championship football games at Gillette Stadium in December this year.

Lucas’ advice to other student-athletes is pretty simple and straightforward: “The same hard work and determination that both school and sports require can be used in any part of your life. If you have a problem, just set intermediate goals and take them head on, one at a time.” Well said.

Congratulations, Lucas! Keep up the hard work. We wish you continued success this year and beyond.
