Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage in New Jersey

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage in New Jersey may help pay your medical expenses and car repair bills if someone crashes into your car and they have low insurance limits or no insurance at all.

This coverage may help you avoid a major financial loss. It is designed to protect you, your passengers and your vehicle. It’s required in New Jersey and you will often hear it referred to by the letters UM/UIM.

Because every claim has unique circumstances, whether your UM/UIM coverage or another part of your insurance applies will depend on your specific situation and the terms of your policy. If you have questions about your coverage, you should read your policy and consult with your insurance professional.

The Two Types of Coverage

There are two basic types of UM/UIM coverage: bodily injury and property damage.
UM/UIM bodily injury coverage is designed to help pay for your medical costs sustained in a covered accident. It may also help to pay for related expenses when you or one of your passengers is injured in a covered accident.

UM/UIM property damage may help you repair your vehicle if it’s damaged by another driver who has low limits or no insurance.

How Does it Typically Work?

It's important to know this coverage does not pay for the expenses of the person who's driving without adequate insurance. Rather, it is designed to pay for your own expenses or the expenses of your injured passengers.

Here is one purely hypothetical example to help you understand how this coverage may work. Say you have $100,000 UM/UIM coverage. While you’re driving, your car is hit by another driver, who causes $20,000 in damages. However, the driver who hit your car only has $15,000 in liability coverage. The other driver’s insurance pays you the $15,000 limit and your insurer pays the remaining $5,000 as part of your UM/UIM coverage, less any applicable deductible.
