Use of the Plymouth Rock App

  • No, there are no fees to download the app.
  • Mobile data charges may apply depending on your mobile carrier and plan. If you want to prevent data charges, you can set the app to transmit data using Wi-Fi-only in the Preferences section (although this will delay transmission of the data and your receipt of a rating).
  • You will be responsible for any data charges and expenses associated with the use of the app.
  • The amount of data used will depend on how much you drive and Wi-Fi usage. The more driving you do, the more data will be used. The app also uses data to upload your drives, so frequently connecting to Wi-Fi can help lower your data usage.
  • The app is designed to minimize data usage. The app “sleeps” in the background until it identifies driving-like behavior. When it sees movement that looks like driving, the app begins recording more precisely. For the average driver who never connects to Wi-Fi, the app is expected to use around 2MB per day.
  • If you would like to only use Wi-Fi to transmit data, you can make this change in the Profile section of the app under DriveSavely Settings.
  • If the Plymouth Rock app is set to use your mobile data, it will be sent during the course of a trip. If it’s set to transmit via Wi-Fi, the data will be saved and transmitted the next time your phone is connected to Wi-Fi. See the Profile section of the app under DriveSavely Settings to change these settings.
  • Changes to your cell phone number should be communicated to Plymouth Rock’s Customer Service Center by calling 800-437-5556, so we can update our records.
  • Yes. Just search for Plymouth Rock in the App Store or Google Play Store from your new phone and download the app, then enter your cell phone number to login. You will be able to view your trip data from the new phone.
  • If your cell phone number has changed, please be sure to communicate these changes to Plymouth Rock’s Customer Service Center by calling 800-437-5556, so we can update our records.
  • The app uses some power from the smartphone battery. Please keep your smartphone charged and turned on when driving to record data.
  • While a trip is in progress, the Plymouth Rock app will consume battery power comparable to other navigational apps. Battery usage while not in motion is negligible.
  • The app will collect data related to your driving habits, such as trip time, speed, acceleration, hard braking, hard cornering, distance travelled, phone motion while driving and location.
  • The app may also collect information regarding your smartphone, such as its hardware model and version, screen and lock states, language, time zone, battery status, connectivity to Bluetooth, charging status, whether a phone call is taking place, and other “heartbeat” characteristics like whether or not location sources and permissions are active for the app.
  • Your driving information is always kept confidential.
  • The Plymouth Rock app stores location-based and phone usage data from your trips and encrypts it prior to transmission. The data is transmitted to the servers of our third-party vendor.
  • We may use your driving information to verify information on insurance policy applications and claim submissions/investigations.
  • We do not share any driver information with any third parties unless we are required by law to do so.
  • For additional information about our privacy policy, please visit Plymouthrock.com/privacy-policy.

Trip Recording

  • In order for the app to automatically record your trips, you should grant the app Location access and “Always Allow” is necessary. For iPhone devices, access to Motion & Fitness Activity is also required.
  • For Android devices, you should give the app location access and allow the app to run in the background for automatic trip capture.
  • Once you have the correct settings, the app is always on in the background and is automatically activated when you start a trip by detecting a faster and longer movement from one point to another. The app may continue to record after your trip has ended to ensure you are not sitting at a traffic light or in a traffic jam.
  • The app will not record trips if your battery level is too low. Technical challenges may also prevent trip capture, such as loss of GPS or mobile network connections. It can also take a few hours for a trip to appear on your phone depending on if you selected mobile data or Wi-Fi to transmit trips.
  • If you still do not see your trips, check Settings on your phone to make sure you have granted all necessary permissions to the app including GPS, location (“Always Allow” is needed), Motion & Fitness for iPhone devices, and allowing the app to run in the background for Android devices.
  • For policyholders, changes to your cell phone number should be communicated to Plymouth Rock’s Customer Solutions Center (800-437-5556) so that the change can be updated in our policy system.

How to Edit the Driver/Trip Tag

  • The app will identify all trips as “Driving” trips (i.e., where the app determines that you were operating a vehicle) or “Not driving” trips (i.e. where the app determines that you were not operating a vehicle).
  • If you were a passenger in a vehicle, you can edit the tag on the trip to reflect that you were not driving. Select the “Not driving” option.
  • If you were using a non-car mode of transportation, and the app does not automatically identify it as non-driving, you can edit the tag on the trip to confirm “Not driving.”
  • If your time allotted to edit the tag has passed and the trip tag is now locked, please contact [email protected] and the trip tag can be edited for you.
  • Any trip with a “Not Driving” tag will not count towards your driving evaluation.
  • From your “Trips” listing, select the trip where you were a passenger in a vehicle or using another mode of transportation. Select the “Not driving” option. Click Confirm to lock in your change. If your time allotted to edit the tag has passed and the trip tag is now locked, please contact [email protected] and the trip tag can be edited for you.

Understanding My Driving Performance

  • The Red / Yellow / Green scale is a quick way to offer you visual feedback on your overall and trip component performance. Green indicates a better performance than yellow, which is a better result than red. Green means you are likely to receive a lower rate at renewal based on your driving behaviors.
  • A Star Rating for individual trips, from 1 star to 5 stars (best), will be assigned for the Overall Trip Rating as well as for each trip component. More stars on each trip component indicate favorable driving performance and correlate to a better Overall Trip Rating.
  • Overall performance is based on all your driving trips that have been recorded by DriveSavely. The colors and star ratings for a single trip are based on your driving skills, such as acceleration, hard braking, speed, and phone use.
  • Acceleration and hard braking measures the level of anticipation of the traffic flows. Factors that impact the acceleration score include the duration of the event, the amount of acceleration, and the speed of the vehicle at the time of the acceleration. The amount of deceleration, speed of the vehicle at the time of the deceleration and duration of the deceleration are factors that impact the hard braking score.
  • Phone Use: This component measures distractions based on the extent of your interactions with the phone while driving. Hands-free use will not affect his score. Frequent phone use could lead to a lower phone use score.
  • Speed: This is a measure of the relative risk of a collision based on the speeds of the driver on each trip. Driving at speeds that are generally considered safe will improve this score, while driving at excessive speeds could lead to a lower speed score.
  • Time of day: This is a measure of the risk posed by other drivers on the road at various times of day when you are also driving. Late night trips are considered riskier.
  • Aim for smooth driving within the speed limit with no phone use. View trip feedback in the “Trips” tab.
  • Colors and ratings will not display until you are designated as the driver of the trip. Any trip with a “Not Driving” tag will not count towards your rating and minimum driving criteria.
  • The app itself does not calculate the score. Your driving data is sent to a server where scores are calculated, so how you select to transmit your driving data may also impact when your trip details will be available. You can view your trip details and performance sooner by allowing the app to use mobile data to transmit your driving data. Mobile data charges may apply depending on your mobile carrier and plan. Using Wi-Fi delays the transmission of data until the next time you are connected to Wi-Fi. You can choose mobile data or Wi-Fi in the Preferences menu of the app.

DriveSavely Impact on My Policy –Policyholders

  • To qualify for a discount at renewal, record at least 30 trips and 300 miles during the evaluation period.
  • Each trip is scored using five components: hard-braking, acceleration, speed, time of day, and handheld phone use while driving. These components will be used to calculate your updated premium. To maximize your savings, you should drive smoothly and safely, keep a steady speed, avoid late night trips and minimize handheld phone activities.
  • Good drivers will receive lower rates upon renewal after completing the evaluation. Drivers with poor driving behaviors may see an increase in their premium.
  • You will get an initial discount on your car insurance for simply participating in the DriveSavely program, and with good driving behavior, you may see even lower rates as your policy continues. Drivers with poor driving behaviors may see higher rates.
  • Good drivers will receive lower rates upon renewal after completing the evaluation. Drivers with poor driving behaviors may see an increase in their premium.
  • If you do not meet the minimum driving criteria in the required timeframe, you may be subject to a premium increase at renewal.
