If you were planning on buying Sweethearts candy conversation hearts for that special someone this Valentine’s Day, you’re going to have to wait another year. For the first time since they debuted in 1866 by the confectionary company Necco, the candy hearts will not be available this year.
Necco declared bankruptcy in 2018, and Spangler Candy Company acquired the rights to the Sweethearts brand. Since it took Necco approximately 11 months to produce 8 billion hearts, Spangler did not have enough lead time to produce them for the 2019 season.
According to CandyStore.com, conversation hearts were the most popular Valentine’s Day candy sold in 2018, generating over $1.8 billion in candy sales. While other brands are on the market, Sweethearts are the original, accounting for an estimated 80% of sales.
