Happy National Nurses Week!

What a great time to be a nurse and be a part of a career that offers so many opportunities to find your own unique path. You can be a home health nurse, a hospital nurse, a nursing home nurse, a nursing educator, a nursing researcher or an advanced practice nurse.

As health care evolves from acute care treatment to chronic care management and preventative care, there will be even more exciting opportunities for nurses. Education programs for nursing are conveniently located and accessible.

I started out as an Associate Degree Nurse at my local community hospital on a medical surgical unit.  Over the years I was able to work in a multitude of other areas and held many different nursing positions. I have worked as a critical care nurse and an orthopedic nurse. I have been a nursing unit manager, a nursing division manager and a nurse educator.  I have also been a clinical instructor for a community college’s nursing program.

Now in the third decade of my career I look back fondly at all the roles and all the different types of patients I cared for. I have never regretted choosing nursing as my career.  I have laughed and I have cried.  I have been proud of what I have accomplished.  I have gone from caring for patients to caring for nurses.

So to all my nursing colleagues enjoy this week of celebrating — you have earned it.  To all the nursing students, you have made a decision that will continually provide you a very rewarding and accomplished career.

To those thinking about being a nurse — come and join us! You will never regret your decision!

You can help celebrate National Nurses Week, too! Thank a nurse that has made a difference in your life by using the hashtag #NursesWeek on social media.
